Jo van Gogh-Bonger was Vincent van Gogh’s sister-in-law, married to his brother Theo. After the brothers died unexpectedly, only a short time apart, Jo—suddenly a single mother—devoted her life from 1891 onward to Vincent’s art and legacy. She played a pivotal role in building the recognition and popularity of Van Gogh’s work, helping lay the groundwork for the museum’s founding in 1973. Through her choices, she was far ahead of her time.
